Chapter Thirteen

Raya

When I went inside, all I could do was drop my bag to the floor and sag against the door. I blinked at the tiles while my heart did a crazy jig behind my ribs, nearly rattling them.

Who knew that when I got home after a shit night at work, it would be to Leland—not Death, but apparently my Leland—stating I was his while going scarily mad because I’d been hurt?

But his reaction had been justified when he’d heard that name.

Poor Jupiter.

My soul felt crushed, and it cried for her. And that someone I knew was responsible for tearing her world apart…. I shook my head, my heart threatening to explode.

Elio was a vile creature.

In the same breath, guilt flooded my veins at the happiness swirling within me. Leland wanted me for more than a few nights of fun. He was in this for real. He wanted to see how this thing between us could grow.

Lifting my gaze, I realized I had my hand pressed to my chest and that Wren stood close, watching me with a soft smile.

Straightening, I shrugged. “What?”

“Just waiting for you to finish processing.”

“I… that was….”

“Raya, it was a holy shit on toast. And what the fuck, Raya? Elio hurt you? But then, how Death reacted was like a fantasy. Scary but very steamy. But seriously, Elio hurt you? Why?”

“I saw something I shouldn’t have,” I told her, pushing off the front door to make my way into the kitchen. I needed a hot mug of cocoa.

Wren followed, saying, “It, ah, sounds like Death will deal with him.”

A shiver swept over me. “Yeah,” I said softly.

“Raya. That was intense, and I wasn’t even on the receiving end.”

Snorting, I nodded. “I know.”

“He wants to date you.”

Pulling a mug from the cupboard, I turned to her. “I know.”

Her gaze widened. “I’ve never seen a man react like that before.”

“Me either.”

“I don’t know if I should feel happy for you or jealous—”

I snapped my eyes to hers. “You don’t have a thing for—”

“No!” she cried. “God, no. He’s like… I don’t know, an older brother.”

That was good, then. “Okay.”

“You do want him, right?”

Rolling my eyes, I went to the refrigerator to grab the milk. “I do.” I faced her again. “But it’s scary. I haven’t been in a relationship in six years, Wren. And this one, with Leland, I think it’ll have me feeling and experiencing more than I’ve ever had to.”

“Oh, I believe you. But imagine what the sex—”

“Wren!” Shaking my head, I went on making my drink, ignoring Wren’s laughter and my blush.

She grinned evilly. “I bet you’ve already imagined it.”

“Shut up.” Of course I had, but my sister didn’t need to know.

When her laughter tapered off, I looked up to see her watching me. “He’s going after him.”

Thinning my lips, I nodded.

“Elio deserves everything he gets.” She spoke with such venom in her tone. I studied how she gripped her phone tightly in front of her. Was she thinking of Dad?

“He does.”

“Do you care that it’ll be Death who… you know?”

“No.
